Management Guidelines
- RiceTec seed products adapt well to planting early and late. April planting in the Mid-South and March planting in southern Louisiana and Texas maximizes yield potential; however, the RiceTec advantage continues throughout the planting season.
- The preferred planting method for RiceTec seed products is drill seeding. The Replant Policy is designed to provide RiceTec seed customers a replant credit in the event a customer does not get an adequate initial stand on his/her RiceTec rice acreage. Refer to the Replant Policy or contact your local RiceTec Representative with questions or replant concerns.
- The RiceTec product seeding rate is at the discretion of the grower. Contact your local Representative or District Sales Manager to discuss what might work best for your farm.
- Seeding rates may need adjusting for specific field conditions, cultural practices, customer preferences, customer equipment, and planting dates. Please contact your local RiceTec Representative to discuss possible seeding-rate adjustments.

Delay second nitrogen application until boot.
Nitrogen requirements for RiceTec seed products involve different timing than conventional varieties.
-
- Total N = 120-150 lbs.
- Preferred N = 90-120 lbs.
- Late Boot = 30 lbs.
Factors that can increase nitrogen use efficiency and protect your yield potential include:
-
- Applying urea to dry, crusted soil to ensure that nitrogen will move down the soil profile once flooded.
- Applying the recommended nitrogen rate for each soil type to maximize yield potential.
- Applying the flood immediately following pre-flood N application.
- Using nitrogen stabilizer to protect pre-flood urea from ammonia volatilization or if applications of urea are made when dry soil conditions cannot be obtained.
Nitrogen stabilizer has been shown to reduce nitrogen loss in less-than-ideal conditions and when the establishment of the permanent flood takes longer than 5 days.
-
- These recommendations may be adjusted according to specific situations on your farm; e.g., if nitrogen deficiency symptoms are evident at midseason, then apply 30 lbs. N per acre at midseason in addition to the base recommendation.
- Apply other nutrients (P, K, etc.) per soil test recommendations.
Follow an integrated weed management approach.
-
- Apply herbicides as desired per manufacturer and/or university recommendations.
- Carefully read and follow all label instructions.
- Excessive rates and/or overlaps of Command® in association with stressful growing conditions may reduce final plant stand and should be avoided.

RiceTec seed products offer the best available disease package. Although current RiceTec seed products normally do not require fungicide treatment, fields should be scouted closely for disease and treated with fungicides, when necessary. Consider field history and environmental conditions when making fungicide decisions.
Begin harvest at 18%-20% grain moisture.
Current RiceTec products are very easy to thresh and should be harvested as soon as grain moisture reaches 18% to 20% to reduce possible grain loss and maximize milling yield.
Apply 100 lbs. N per acre prior to ratoon crop flood-up.
Ratoon crop nitrogen should be applied at a rate of 100 lbs. N per acre, preferably onto dry ground. Nitrogen should be applied and a flood should be established immediately after harvest. Increased nitrogen rates and/or flail mowing may cause up to a two-week delay in maturity, but grain yield increases of 500 to 1,000 lbs. per acre have been routinely documented in flail-mowed fields.

RiceTec Celebrates 25 Years of Hybrid Rice in the US
Alvin, TX (August 15, 2024) – Over 300 stakeholders gathered in Harrisburg, Arkansas on August 7, 2024, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of hybrid rice in the US. This milestone event highlighted the profound influence of hybrid rice on sustainable agriculture and the economy.
Since its founding, RiceTec has served as a driving force for sustainability and innovation in rice farming. The introduction of RiceTec’s hybrid rice in 2000 marked a pivotal shift in the industry, dramatically increasing yields and infusing billions into the economy. The event honored the collective efforts of the rice community—farmers, distributors, researchers, producers, and partners—acknowledging their joint efforts in advancing sustainable rice agriculture.
Dr. Brian Ottis, RiceTec’s Director of US Marketing and Product Management welcomed attendees to a festive event featuring food trucks, a beer wagon, and live music. He expressed gratitude for everyone’s role in this transformation. “Our 25th year milestone is a testament to our collective dedication to sustainable agriculture and innovation,” Ottis remarked. “We are deeply grateful to the farmers, researchers, scientists, and partners who have contributed to our success and propelled us forward.”
Van McNeely, Head of US Business, commended the 76 visionary farmers who planted the seeds of success by growing hybrid rice on 12,000 acres 25 years ago. Their foresight laid the groundwork for today’s thriving industry and widespread adoption of hybrid rice in the US.
Dr. Jarrod Hardke, University of Arkansas Professor and Rice Extension Agronomist, highlighted the significant impact of hybrid adoption on production systems, particularly row rice and alternate wetting and drying (AWD). “The flexibility provided by hybrids has been a game-changer for our production systems,” Dr. Hardke stated. He noted that approximately 20% of rice acres in Arkansas are now dedicated to row rice.
CEO Karsten Neuffer emphasized the essential role of the entire ecosystem in driving hybrid rice adoption. “Today, only China and the US have significant hybrid penetration,” he remarked. “Why is that? It requires two key elements: dedicated commitment from an organization to develop the technology, and more importantly, the support of the entire ecosystem to make it happen. That’s why we’re here today, to celebrate our collective achievement of 25 years of hybrid rice.”
Neuffer continued, “Hybrid rice has improved yields by 24% and generated billions of dollars for US farmers, mills, and research. It has also reduced methane emissions by 42%, saving over 18 million metric tons of CO2e. These achievements highlight the impact of hybrid rice adoption.”
As we reflect on a quarter-century of innovation and growth, RiceTec remains steadfast in our vision of delivering more value for farmers, consumers, and the planet. We are proud of the past achievements made together by RiceTec and the rice industry and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire ecosystem that has supported us and each other – our partners, the rice community, and every individual who has contributed to our journey. Together, we will continue to cultivate success and sustainability, ensuring that the US rice industry flourishes for generations to come.

Texas and Louisiana rice growers ready to plant – awaiting perfect soil temperatures
ALVIN, TX (March 10, 2022) – Rice growers across Texas and Louisiana are preparing for a positive 2022 crop year and have already started some water and drill seeding, but most await more favorable soil temperatures.
“Weather so far this spring has been very favorable for land preparation allowing producers to be “sitting on go” for planting,” said Jeff Mosley, RiceTec Regional Sales Manager.
RiceTec anticipates that rice acres will be flat or slightly up for the 2022 crop year for Texas and Southern Louisiana. On acres that require a product with herbicide technology (HT), FullPage® hybrid RT7321 FP is a popular choice across the Gulf Coast rice areas along with its companion, RT7521 FP. The much-anticipated Max-Ace® hybrid product, along with RiceTec’s first varietal release with HT traits, RTv7231 MA have also been in high demand. Additionally, Conventional hybrid XP753 continues to be the market leader in acres intended for non-HT plantings in both states.
Producers have expressed concerns about the current situation in Eastern Europe and its impact on the market and availability of nitrogen (N) fertilizers; however, despite those concerns and high soybean prices, rice still proves to be a viable commodity.
“In the last crop, the 2021 season was highlighted for a reduction in rice areas in the midsouth,” said Mosley. “However, rice demand continues to be strong which is strengthening prices in the market. Hopefully the prices sustain throughout 2022 season.”
Although rice is a high input crop, it is also seen as a high return crop. “A savvy producer can maximize the return on his investment in a rice crop by using RiceTec products on his acres due to the hybrid’s performance stability across a wide range of environments, production practices, and management levels,” added Mosley.
Hybrid rice products continue to perform well when subjected to stressful conditions like environmental factors, diseases, and insect pressures. “Combine this with RiceTec’s hybrid’s ability to produce very strong second crop yields, and lucrative customer programs such as loyalty and volume rebates, we think this lends to more chances for a producer’s successful profitability.”
With planting getting underway, RiceTec field teams suggest that producers focus on making sure drills are in good working order. They recommend reviewing the condition of rubber seed tubes, seed cups and doors, drive wheel tires, and any other part(s) of the drill that should be free of holes and replaced if worn or damaged. The drill should also be calibrated before going to the field.
“Don’t forget to inflate the drive wheels and other tires to manufacturer recommended specifications as that can most definitely affect the calibration,” suggests Mosley. “Taking these steps will ensure the proper amount of seed is planted to maximize production, and profits in the long run.”
In addition to the rebates, RiceTec provides additional programs that add extra value for a producer including but not limited to replant programs, stand guarantees for qualified producers, and industry agronomic expertise in their local sales managers.
“Our goal as a field sales team is to provide as much support to the producer as we can to help ensure a successful outcome, said Mosley. “If you’re still in need of rice seed, don’t hesitate to contact RiceTec now.”

RiceTec and ADAMA partner limited launch of Max-Ace® herbicide-tolerant rice system
• By Vicky Boyd, Editor

This season, RiceTec and Adama plan a limited launch of the Max-Ace Rice Crop Solution system that pairs RiceTec’s herbicide-tolerant rice cultivars with Adama’s proprietary herbicide.
The introduction marks another milestone for Alvin, Texas-based RiceTec — it will include a hybrid for which the company is known as well as a variety.
The two companies plan to have 40 to 50 farm-scale demonstrations throughout the South and Mid-South this season showcasing the new production system. They will be split between the Max-Ace hybrid and variety.
RiceTec and Adama also plan to hold field tours so growers can learn first-hand about the production system. Using traditional techniques, RiceTec has developed Max-Ace cultivars that are tolerant to over-the-top applications of quizalofop herbicide.
Highcard, which contains the active ingredient quizalofop, is formulated with a patented safener for improved crop safety, said Dave Feist, Adama product strategy manager for rice.
The Environmental Protection Agency granted the herbicide a full Section 3 registration in February, and it is labeled for use only on Max-Ace rice. Highcard is not registered for use in California.
RiceTec is awaiting Canadian approval of the Max-Ace non-GMO herbicide tolerance trait. As a result, harvests from the demonstration fields will be identity preserved and channeled accordingly.
RiceTec Max-Ace offerings
RT7331 MA is a Max-Ace hybrid with comparable yield and plant characteristics to XP753, said Leandro Pasqualli, RiceTec marketing manager. It also has the strong disease package of other RiceTec hybrids.
RTv7231 MA is a Max-Ace variety that is four to five days earlier in maturity than RT7331 MA or XP753. RTv7231 MA has blast resistance and comparable production to the highest yielding varieties on the market.
“The Max-Ace Rice Cropping Solution is in high demand for its outstanding grass weed control with Highcard herbicide in rice, and RiceTec is doing all that we can to provide seed for our growers,” Pasqualli said. “Max-Ace will give an additional herbicide rotation partner to steward weed resistance in herbicide tolerant rice solutions.”
RiceTec recommends planting RTv7231 MA at 800,000 to 900,000 seeds per acre, since it is a variety. The company recommends planting RT7331 MA at its standard hybrid seeding rate of 450,000 seeds per acre.
With the early maturity of RTv7231 MA, it will be important to ensure harvesting at the optimal 18% to 20% grain moisture, which could be easily overlooked, he said.
In field trials so far, the Max-Ace system has provided excellent yield performance, good disease resistance, and strong weed control and crop tolerance when paired with Highcard herbicide, Pasqualli said.
Start clean, stay clean
Regardless of the rice type grown, Feist said it’s always best to start clean and stay clean by applying a preplant residual herbicide, such as clomazone or pendimethalin.
Because Highcard is a grass herbicide, he said growers will need to incorporate broadleaf products into their weed control program.
The Highcard label allows for up to 15.5 fluid ounces per application and no more than 31 fluid ounces per season. Feist said researchers compared three 10-ounce applications to two 15-ounce applications and found two at the higher rates provided nearly complete control of grasses, including weedy rice.
“We don’t want the red rice to escape and cross pollinate with the crop,” he said. The label also restricts use to two applications spaced at least 10 days apart. As part of weed resistance management, Feist recommended against cutting
Highcard rates, noting Max-Ace rice can withstand the higher labeled rates without crop response because of its strong genetic tolerance.
Herbicide application timings
The first Highcard application should be made when the rice is at the two- to three-leaf stage, with a second application made at least 10 days later and before panicle initiation. The actual timing depends on weed pressure.
For best results, applications should be made on warm, sunny days when both the rice and weeds are actively growing.
And weather for the preceding days is much more important than for the following days, Feist said. Application during cloudy or overcast days should be avoided when possible.
As part of Max-Ace stewardship, growers must agree to make two Highcard applications. The stewardship agreement also recommends growers rotate to conventional rice, a different herbicide-traited rice — or better yet, a different crop entirely — the year following Max-Ace rice.
Because Highcard does not carry over in the soil, growers are able to plant non-ACCase-tolerant rice varieties or hybrids the following year.
Adama researchers continue to test the tankmix compatibility of Highcard and broadleaf herbicides. So far, quinclorac and Loyant appear to be suitable tankmix partners, he said.
“I think we’re going to see a lot of quinclorac-type mixes be very popular. It’s going to have a good fit,” Feist said. “The others we’re still exploring. They’re not perfect mix partners, let’s put it that way.”
Among the more antagonistic are phenoxies, which are rarely used on rice any more, and propanil, he said.

When RiceTec launched its newest charitable program, Harvesting Hope, the company had no idea it would be amid a time that nonprofits would be struggling to raise funds to achieve their missions.
Under the program, RiceTec customers who donated 1 acre of milled rice proceeds to their choice of a 501(c)3 nonprofit received one bag of seed at no charge for the 2021 planting season. In total, 27 growers gave more than $43,000 to their favorite charities.
For nonprofits like Personal Pep Rally, this donation meant covering half the cost of their Joy Mail Program.
“When someone agrees to partner with your passions, it is a real honor,” said Misti Coker, board member for Personal Pep Rally. “Our volunteers put in many hours to meet our mission and donations from supporters like RiceTec make it possible for that work to be done.”
Personal Pep Rally is an Arkansas-based nonprofit designed to motivate, encourage and educate those with a cancer diagnosis. They fulfill the mental health piece of a patient’s cancer journey by serving as a resource for patient education, providing access to counseling and having a scholarship program.
Their unique Joy Mail sends care packages and uplifting support letters written by cancer survivors to current cancer patients not only in Arkansas but across the United States and Canada.
“We’re excited to see the success of this new program,” said Matt Snow, RiceTec district sales manager. “We stepped outside of our traditional community outreach efforts to try something new that would involve our grower’s favorite charities, and this proved to meet community needs and create connections across our various service regions.”
Additional charities that received funds included Aeroangel, Arkansas Baptist Foundation, CASA of Jonesboro, Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana, Hunting for a Cure: the Price Hancock Foundation, Make A Wish, St. Jude and Wounded Warrior Project.
“In a time when the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas is distributing more food than ever before, RiceTec came to us with donations from their Harvesting Hope program and helped us to provide 16,000 meals to people facing hunger in our community,” added Rebecca Hendrix, chief development officer at the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas.

RiceTec brings new products and super loyalty to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
Jonesboro, AR (Oct. 7, 2020) – RiceTec launches the 2021 sales season with an all-star line-up of products, including two FullPage™ products that showed positive results in 2020 harvest and a limited supply of a new low chalk option.
Two FullPage™ products are on sale for 2021: RT7321 FP, which has shown a +25%* yield advantage versus CL153, and combined with a superior disease package, growers have seen improved grain retention and excellent ratoon potential. Second, as part of the new generation of high-yielding RiceTec products, RT7521 FP delivers excellent yield potential and the ability to spread out harvest with a slightly later maturity of 117 days.
“FullPage™ products have exceeded expectations in the fields and we’ve seen impressive tolerance from Preface on our FullPage products too,” said Van McNeely, RiceTec Director of Sales and Technical Services. “Supplies have also increased for 2021 planting and based on grower experiences in 2020, we expect the largest volume increase in RT7321 FP and RT7521 FP.”
Responding to demand, and acting on successful research, RiceTec will now offer a lower chalk seed option. RT7401 will be available at introductory levels and yields similar to XP753.
Additionally, the conventional XP753 has continued to provide growers with the greatest net income potential of any competitive rice product in the marketplace. This product also proves to administer consistent performance in any environment.
Another option for growers looking for an alternative conventional product is the high-yielding RT7301, which challenges the Diamond product with more than +22%* yield advantage at a lower price point. Growers have also seen excellent ratoon potential and superior disease resistance in this product.
RiceTec is also expanding its loyalty program by adding a Super Loyalty Rebate for growers to earn additional opportunities on rebate programs for planting RiceTec seed over the next three consecutive years.
RiceTec will also continue to offer a seed return policy, a 100% stand guarantee policy and a replant policy, all to achieve maximum customer satisfaction**.
“The 2021 sales season has already kicked-off strong with growers requesting products directly from the combine,” said McNeely. “We encourage clients to place their seed orders early this season.”
Growers can find more information about purchasing RiceTec seed at www.ricetec.com or calling 877-580-7423.

RiceTec Donates $150,000 to Ducks Unlimited in Support of Rice Stewardship Partnership
RIDGELAND, Miss. – February 13, 2020– Rice Tec, known for their innovation in hybrid rice seed and production technology, has renewed their support for the USA Rice-Ducks Unlimited Rice Stewardship Partnership.
“RiceTec and DU are both focused on solutions for producers that lead to greater on-farm profits, and therefore a more sustainable rice industry,” said Dr. Brian Ottis, Director of Supply Management for RiceTec. “We helped support the launch of Rice Stewardship in 2014 and are proud to renew our commitment today with capacity support of $150,000 through 2022.”
Special funding from RiceTec’s owners, the Royal Family of Liechtenstein and their Liechtenstein Global Trust Foundation, made this next sustainability chapter a reality.
RiceTec’s service areas and DU’s priority conservation landscapes are perfectly aligned across the Gulf Coastal Prairies and the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, two of the most critical wintering areas for waterfowl on the continent. Along the Gulf Coast, rice agriculture provides 42% of the food available to wintering dabbling ducks. RiceTec’s Smart Rice hybrids are the most sustainable rice seed available, producing a better bottom line by increasing yields, escaping disease pressure, and reducing input costs related to irrigation and energy.

Greenhouse tents up and ready for rice study
The Arkansas State University Arkansas Biosciences Institute has finished the final touches on six rice tents in Harrisburg.
Construction began on May and workers said it’s been a long process.
Crews battled through both extreme heat and consistent rain for 11 weeks.
The purpose of the study is to monitor heat temperatures within each rice plant for the next three years.
Once the study is finished, farmers can look at different breeds of rice and see how each plant performed in a heat-stressed environment.
Shea Harris is one of the workers for the project and said this could impact farmers throughout Region 8.
“All of those are popular within the region,” Harris said. “And a lot are the top rice varieties grown here in Arkansas.”
The six tents have exactly 320 different varieties of rice.
Some of the hired hands involved in the study are college and high school students.
This study is a collaboration between Rice-Tec, Arkansas State University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Kansas State University.

RiceTec releases product line-up for fall 2018 sales
RiceTec remains consistent in yield, pricing and loyalty offerings for customers.
ALVIN, TX (Oct. 10, 2017) – RiceTec rice seed officially went on sale this week offering rice growers the opportunity to purchase the highest-yielding long grain rice seed on the market. RiceTec also announced the return of volume discounts and loyalty programs for customers.
“We were able to increase seed supplies for 2018, but with a forecasted increase of rice acres and two years of unmet seed demand, supplies will still be tight, particularly on some of the most popular hybrids such as the newest releases RT7311 CL and Gemini 214 CL,” reported Van McNeely, Director of Sales for RiceTec. “We are excited to see XP753 preforming as our highest-yielding commercial product since its release. It also broke some yield records this year in customers’ fields, as well as in trials, so I expect it to be a hot product this year.”
The consistency and reliability of yield hold steady in RiceTec’s 2018 product line-up that includes eight seed options; three conventional products: XL723, XP753 and XP760, and five herbicide-tolerant products: CL XL729, CL XL745, CL XP4534, RT7311 CL, and Gemini 214 CL.
Sustainable farming traits have become a trend over the past few years and evermore growing in popularity in 2017. RiceTec’s Smart Rice combines high yield advantage hybrid seeds with sustainable farming practices that are helping farmers be successful.
“In 2017, some rice farmers were able to sell carbon credits into the carbon exchange market by combining sustainable rice production practices along with Smart Rice hybrids. When putting these two things together, a grower can generate the most sustainable production possible,” said Dr. Brian Ottis, RiceTec Global Development Lead. “As these markets develop, there may be additional opportunities for rice farmers who adopt these practices to generate additional income on top of the benefits they already get by growing RiceTec hybrids.”
In addition to its quality seed offerings, RiceTec presents customer loyalty rebates for the full-season, meaning it applies to fall and spring seed purchases. Customers do however need to register by February 15, 2018. To qualify for the loyalty rebate, growers must plant 90% of their long-grain acres with RiceTec hybrids and submit their 2018 FSA-578 form by August 1, 2018.
Growers also have the potential to earn up to a 5% discount by reaching the maximum volume discount of more than 700 units. Purchases between 200 and 699 Units are still eligible for discounts from 1.5-3% and fall purchases are encouraged to ensure availability.
Lastly, RiceTec designed its 2017 Replant Policy to provide RiceTec seed customers a replant credit in the event a customer does not get an adequate initial stand on his/her RiceTec rice acreage. RiceTec customers will be offered a 50 percent replant opportunity on any RiceTec rice seed under specific conditions detailed by a RiceTec representative or listed on the website here.
“Stability is the key word to describe RiceTec hybrid products,” said McNeely. “2017 was another tough year for growers with widespread flooding and storms, but based on customer feedback and trial data, RiceTec hybrids held up far better than varieties again in 2017. The superior yield potential and stability across adverse environments translates into improved economic returns and drives seed demand.”
Growers can find out more about purchasing RiceTec seed at www.ricetec.com or calling 877-580-7423.

The FullPage® Rice Cropping Solution and Preface and Postscript herbicides, and Squad® seed treatment technologies were released by RiceTec and ADAMA in 2019. FullPage® represents a new generation of improved IMI herbicide tolerance for rice seed, improving yields, herbicide tolerance and early-season disease and insect protection.
FullPage® hybrids show a marked improvement in tolerance to IMI herbicides. This improved tolerance reduces the risk of crop response during stressful growing conditions and in overlap situations, and increases overall yield. This reduces stress for the grower and improves application, timing and flooding flexibility.
The FullPage® Cropping Solution includes the use of Preface™ (imazethapyr) and Postscript™ (imazamox) herbicides. Preface tackles troublesome rice weeds such as red, weedy and feral rice and barnyard grass. It combines post-emergence and residual activity. Postscript can be applied post-emergence or post-flood for any escapes.
The four FullPage® products available for the 2023 planting season and protected by Squad include: RT7321 FP, RT7421 FP, RT7521 FP, and RT7523 FP.
The Squad seed treatment system highlights a special treatment technology that creates a smooth surface that allows for better seed identification, improved flowability and planting, and more uniform seed distribution throughout the field, along with proven fungicide and insecticide treatments.
RiceTec and ADAMA provide this total-package weed management system that is fully supported by a team of technical service representatives to make a positive impact on today’s farmers. These representatives are readily available to assist growers in adjusting to this new cropping solution and advising on best practices for use of Preface and Postscript for each farm.

Stand Establishment Can Make or Break a Crop

Stand establishment can make or break a crop
South Louisiana rice farmers dodged big rains and continue planting. But they are advised to drain water from drill-seeded fields to promote germination.
The unexpected rains in early March have delayed rice planting in some regions, but in South Louisiana, some growers began planting as early as late February. These growers have put in a extra work due to the rainy weather, but thankfully those who use a water-seeding system are still looking good so far.
Spring arrived earlier this year, and soil temperatures were higher than normal in early March. Much of the rice was planted ahead of the storm that was predicted to drop 8 to 10 inches of rain in those areas. Luckily, most areas where rice was planted did not receive more than 3 inches of rain, and many areas received only 1.5 to 2 inches.
“Many last-minute decisions have to be made when planting rice,” says Cullen Minter, RiceTec field representative. “Those decisions can determine success or failure in stand establishment, which is the building block for producing a profitable crop.”

CL XL729 pushes out of the ground March 14 in Jeff Davis Parish, La.
When rice planting started in late February, little rain was forecast. So farmers were planting to moisture. This allowed most of the earliest planted rice to take up oxygen and moisture and start to germinate before it rained. Those fields are now marking rows and progressing nicely. In the fields planted closer to the forecasted rain, RiceTec recommended planting the seed as shallow as possible, while still covering it.
“This form of planting allows the seed to take up oxygen sooner as the fields are drained and begin to dry,” Minter says. “One of the problems seen in 2015 was seed being submerged too long and rotting in the ground deprived of oxygen needed for germination. “Drilling as shallow as possible before a large rain event is a way to mitigate the problem of flooding.”
Rice seed needs moisture, oxygen and adequate soil temperature for germination to begin. Water seeding rice differs from drill seeding due to a layer of oxygen at the soil surface in a flooded field. This layer of oxygen allows the seed to begin germination while submerged in a water-seeded system. In drill-seeded rice, the seed is deprived of oxygen beneath the soil surface in a flooded field and will not start to germinate until the soil begins to dry.
“Draining, pumping, puddling or doing whatever it takes to get the water off the field is very important after all this rain subsides,” Minter says. “We’re happy to see that rice farmers in the South Louisiana area who drilled are starting to see good looking stands.”
